Just niggling on the details, I was talking about the larger social consensuses that arise in society. The obama-trump-biden-trump roller-coaster is a more political process that has shifted on 1% changes in a mass national vote, and Trump has never sustained over 50% approval ratings, even if he touched them sometimes.
I hope the younger generation's move to reject experts and to believe in lying videos on every subject from bowel care on up is not a full social movement does not really represent a larger social consensus, but it is probably helping to prevent any larger mood from arising in more subsets and demographic groups.
It's very hard to tell, isn't it, where these strange modern streams of mis-culture and dis-culture will go to. I've tried to walk the high road in my wanderings, so I'm not acquainted with too many of insult warriors, they don't get much traction besides when they're being ridiculed on my more progressive and neutral silos.
As a historian, I'm trying to see how in general opinion wars like this there's always counter-currents to the most publicized trends, and usually five or more 'associated but different' subgroups on both the main trend and the counter-trend.
Reversals of large cultural trends do occur in many local histories, usually on timelines of 20 years or more, accounting for them pretty much involves figuring out the thoughts and actions of huge numbers of folks who weren't keeping records we can access. Music, humor and a stoic attitude can ease the frustrations of never being able to get exact answers to these great historical questions.
I am crossing my fingers and hoping a disgust with T.'s dictatorial insanity will help us a lot in the coming months.
Thx for taking note. Things have moved so fast in recent years that the 20-year cycle idea may be outdated. Just think about how quickly we shifted from Obama optimism to Trump “carnage.” A flip back could take place starting with the midterm elections and the 2028 presidential race. I am inclined to put faith in Hegel on this, hoping for an equal and opposite reaction sooner rather than later. Naive hopefulness? Perhaps. But we’ll find out in time.

Ron,
