Just read Horse: a Novel by Geraldine Brooks. She channels both a current Afro-American from Lagos and a civil war slave. Afterword I commented on how kindly reviewers treated her compared to Jeanine Cummins author of American Dirt. Maybe because Brooksis Australian? That's a stretch. Seems to be a double or very movable standard. You might ask the publisher in your family.
Brooks is superb. But I suspect that she would have a lot of trouble getting published as a new author today. Her record makes her work impossible to ignore. Thanks for taking note of this Substack.
