Hi JW! Please tell your sister not to worry too much about the grid!

As a new electric car owner, I've gotten swept into the ev culture/subculture, and there's lots to mitigate the impact of electric cars on the grid. First, most people charge at home and overnight almost all the time. And utilities offer discounts on charging rate when the grid is at its most underused at late night or early morning, so there's real incentive to do so (and the charger can switch on and off by itself). With those incentives, pretty common to end up with a cost per mile 80% below a gas car's cost. And, honestly, once you're in the electric ecosystem, it's not a far reach to decide to put panels on the roof, which more than offset any new consumption from your vehicle.

So, sis, while there's a real need to upgrade and maintain the grid for lots of reasons, EV's aren't likely to be what clogs it up!
